Last Friday morning (Sept 24), was more unusual than most. I found myself, bleary eyed, stood outside Leeds city art gallery at 9am on a blustery autumn morning watching a white van (not something I make a habit of doing). The unique thing about this particular white van was the incredible drumming coming from within. Polar Bear's Seb Rochford was embarking on an unconventional art project organised by Simon Thackray, curator of The Shed, which was visiting 6 Yorkshire towns throughout the day. During the 20 minute performance a crowd gathered, intrigued by the noise radiating from the closed van, whilst many walked by looking confused and uncomfortable. The doors of the van were flung open for the final minutes of Seb's debut solo van gig revealing the drummer and audience to each other before packing up, and after a quick chat, shooting off to York in time for his next performance.
