Published 11 September 2012 by BWL

Jherek Bischoff has begun his latest tour as main support for Amanda Palmer, as well as being a member of Palmer's band, The Grand Theft Orchestra. The tour kicked off last night in Philadelphia and reaches Europe in late October. All dates can be found here.

Meanwhile, a second video from Bischoff's performance at this year's Ecstatic Music Festival has been released. 'Young & Lovely' features Zac Pennington, Sam Mickens and The Wordless Music Orchestra. A rendition of 'Eyes' featuring David Byrne, from the same show, was unveiled earlier in the year. Both tracks are taken from Jherek's album Composed, which was released in May.

Polar Bear are back
Published 14 September 2012 by BWL

Sebastian Rochford's Polar Bear return to the fray this winter, with their first full London show since August 2011, and appearances in Bristol and Gateshead. These gigs will be the first opportunity to hear brand new material that will be recorded for the group’s fifth album, scheduled for release in 2013.

The London-based jazz group will play a special show at Rich Mix in Shoreditch on December 15, with guests and DJs to be announced. Before then, the quintet play at Bristol Jam festival along with Hauschka (ft. Samuli Kosminen) on November 7 and a double-header with the Jack DeJohnette Group at The Sage in Gateshead on November 21. See all shows here.

As you may have noticed, in Polar Bear's absence Rochford has not exactly been twiddling his thumbs. As well as his collaborative singles club on Leaf, Days And Nights At The Takeaway, which has seen the involvement of the likes of LV, Micachu and Jehst, Rochford has been busy with numerous projects, including the recent Africa Express tour with Malian singer Rokia Traoré, Andy Sheppard's Trio Libero, Shabaka Hutching's Sons Of Kemet, a duo with Kit Downes, and Open Souls with Ranjana Ghatak and Jason Singh. He’s also been honing his production skills, including an EP with Hackney rapper Mikill Pane.

Matthew Bourne's World Tour Of London
Published 18 September 2012 by BWL

Pianist Matthew Bourne embarks on a trailblazing World Tour Of London (grab flyer here) this October. There will be four separate and very different performances in the capital between October 9 and 14, showcasing Bourne’s multifarious talents. In addition, he has added other solo shows in the UK (see our live page here).

We're launching the tour with a quintessentially Bourne video clip. In this Jubilee year, he pays tribute to our reigning monarch with this rendition of the National Anthem...

The first show of the tour, at Deptford’s Laban Theatre, brings together six of the UK's leading jazz and improvising pianists for a unique ‘Piano Relay’ event, featuring duo performances and a relay in which all six musicians perform an extended, improvised piece in spontaneous combinations. The performance will be recorded for future broadcast on BBC Radio 3’s Jazz On 3 show. The other featured performers are Kit Downes, Liam Noble, Robert Mitchell, Alcyona Mick and Pat Thomas.

Show number two forms the opening night of Talvin Singh’s Symbiosis Of Sound festival at King’s Place. Bourne will perform improvisations on solo piano, as part of a bill that also features pianist Ustav Lal (playing his own compositions using the Indian classical melodic system). Talvin Singh gives a pre-concert introduction.

The following night, Bourne makes a headline appearance at the prestigious St John’s Smith Square, performing pieces from his recent Montauk Variations album.

The World Tour Of London concludes with three performances in the rather less auspicious (if rather more happening) surroundings of Dalston’s Shacklewell Arms. The bill for this free gig (book your ticket here) will be topped by the live debut of Billy Moon, a collaboration between Bourne and vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Seaming To. The duo will perform all new material, to be recorded for an album release in 2013.

Main support for this show comes from Andrew Plummer’s visceral World Sanguine Report, with whom Bourne also performs.

Bourne opens the night himself with a short set of improvised pieces on his prized Memorymoog synthesizer. A splendid time is guaranteed for all.

Bourne plans to mount World Tours of other world cities in the future.

You can find all of Bourne's upcoming shows here (including UK gigs with Collider, World Sanguine Report, Bourne Davis Kane, and Nostalgia '77).

Roll The Dice meets Pole - In Dubs EP
Published 27 September 2012 by BWL

Swedish duo Roll The Dice release an EP of dub remixes by highly influential German electronic producer Pole (aka Stefan Betke) on November 19. Betke has expertly reworked tracks from last year's In Dust for this limited 12"/download entitled In Dubs.

Coinciding with the release, Scandinavian directors Frode & Marcus have made a rather eerie video for 'Cause And Effect' from In Dust. The video was premiered earlier on

Frode & Marcus have worked with RTD on all their previous videos, including the post-apocalyptic world conjured up in the In Dust teaser.

Roll The Dice are touring this autumn, see dates here.

Seb Rochford's Days And Nights At The Takeaway 9: September
Published 28 September 2012 by BWL

September's Takeaway single is here and the guest this month is Drew McConnell (Babyshambles).

Instead of a single and a remix this time, there are two original and highly contrasting songs by McConnell and the project's founder, Sebastian Rochford. The tracks were premiered on This Is Fake DIY earlier this week. The tracks are all publicly available to stream on the project's Bandcamp.

Rochford has compiled a mix for Tom Ravenscroft's show on BBC 6 Music tonight. The programme starts at 7pm and will also feature a short interview with the drummer.
